Story: What would you do if your road in life is heading for a dead-end? What would you do if you had to fight a fatal illness when you haven’t yet reached a peak moment in your life? What would you do if the love of your life is being snatched from your hands while you’re drowning in the agony of your terminal ailment? These are some of the difficult decisions that Aman Mathur (Shahrukh Khan) has to make throughout Kal Ho Naa Ho.

Kal Ho Na Ho takes place in Manhattan, New York, and is the story of three friends, Aman, Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), and Naina (Preity Zinta), who travel on a journey that teaches them the true meaning of friendship. It teaches them to discover themselves, and to find the courage to live through times of happiness and times of sorrow.

Why will Karan, never allow another director to direct his films?

Karan Johar will never allow any one else to direct his films after KAL HO NAA HO.”It’s like giving birth to your own child and handing it over to some one ” says Karan. “It is very unnerving to be on the sets and not say ‘action’ or ‘cut’”, he adds.

What does Karan have to say on his casting ? Every project is written with Shah Rukh Khan in mind. Shah Rukh Khan will be in every Dharma Productions. But the indispensable casting was that of Saif Ali Khan, the combination of humour with emotion, couldn’t have been done by any one else. The heroine’s role was written for Kareena Kapoor, but there were problems and Preity stepped in. Saif was intimidated by Shah Rukh Khan, because he thought, Dharma Productions is the domain of Shah Rukh.

Saif’s role is the best role of the film.

Jaya didn’t even listen to the script, accepted the role inconditionally, went on the treadmill for 3 months, worked out, lost weight to look good in modern costumes, she was suppose to wear as a modern mother.

Kajol and Rani Mukerjee are my lucky mascots, thatswhy they had to be in KAL HO NAA HO. Karan wrote the role of Kanta Ben for Sulabha Arya, according to him, only she could perform the way she has.

How was the title of the film coined ? Initially, Aditya Chopra had given the title KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA, to KAL HO NAA HO, but Karan thought, it was very serious, because the film is lot of fun as well. He had heard a song from HAMESHA, picturised on Kajol and Saif, “Aisa milan, kal ho na ho, aisi lagan, kal ho na ho..”. He liked the line and kept it as a title of this film. It has a lot of hope.

Karan on the music of KAL HO NAA HO Karan Johar paid Rs. 8 lakhs to acquire the rights of the song ‘Pretty woman’.

The music of KAL HO NAA HO is Karan’s most favourite and the title song of this film is his career’s best song.
