Olive (Abigail Breslin), a pudgy, bespectacled seven-year-old, wants to take home the coveted Little Miss Sunshine crown at an upcoming beauty pageant.

To help her achieve her dream, her wildly dysfunctional family sets out on an interstate road trip. Family patriarch Richard (Kinnear) is a motivational speaker who continues to cling to his cliché-ridden philosophies, much to the chagrin of his increasingly annoyed spouse, Sheryl (Collette).

Their son (Paul Dano) is a moody teenager who has taken a vow of silence while granddad (Arkin) is a drug-addled ex-hippie. Finally, Sheryl’s brother (Carell) is a lecturer suffering depression over his failed love affair and losing a prestigious grant. With them all together, the stage is set for a road trip in which sanity takes a back seat.
