Synopsis
At the beginning of the film, Ranbeer (Saif Ali Khan), a leading industrialist in India, is lonely because he has lost everyone who is dear to him. Out his own inattention, he mistakenly kills a husband and wife, whereupon the judge appointed to decide his position according to law sentences him to look after their four children, and to do so without ill-treating them or distancing them from himself. Because the children resent Ranbeer for his role in their parents’ death, they desire revenge, whereas he is unprepared to co-operate with them, so that all of the people concerned are miserable. One day, the children pray to God (Rishi Kapoor) for help, whereupon viewers see a scene of God ‘conducting’ a morning sky and later discussing the activities of humans with a small number of fairylike, white-clad female angels. Here, God is presented as a good-natured, omniscient figure whose motives remain unclear but are implied to be wise. When the children’s prayer becomes a subject of conversation, God decides to send Geeta (Rani Mukerji), His favorite and the most whimsical of the angels, to unite Ranbeer with the children. This is a cause of dismay among the other angels, who perceive Geeta as irresponsible and envy God’s favoritism of her. Despite their advice, God sends Geeta, warning that she is ordered not to use her ability to alter reality during her time on Earth. Geeta ignores this warning immediately and continues to use this ability throughout most of the film, providing comic relief. On Earth, Geeta appoints herself as the children’s governess, surprising Ranbeer, and places the children in awe of her by use of her transformative powers. Later, she becomes ingratiated with the children by a combination of these powers with supportive affection, a compassionate but firm establishment of social structure, and positive regard. As a result, they begin to cherish her and depend on her for their emotional strength. Ranbeer remains perplexed and overwhelmed by her dominance of his affairs; but soon becomes enamored of her, despite the interference presented by his girlfriend Malaika (Ameesha Patel). Ranbeer’s affair with Malaika is eventually terminated when the children spoil a party she is hosting. Later, Ranbeer and the children slowly become friends, with the eventual result that they gradually forsake their desire for revenge and treat him as they would an elder brother while he subconsciously assumes the role of father-figure. This development climaxes during their visit to California, wherein Ranbeer’s American colleague insults the children, provoking Ranbeer to defend them. Also during this visit, the children perceive Ranbeer’s growing attachment to Geeta and attempt to encourage it. Ultimately, Geeta becomes frightened by her reciprocation of Ranbeer’s desires and flees, hoping to return to Heaven. Reacting to this, Ranbeer and the children go to a church to pray that she return to them. Simultaneously, God visits Geeta and converses with her on the subject of her new attachments and the question of whether she will remain on Earth as a part of their newly-formed family. Conceding to her wishes, God changes Geeta into a human and allows her return to the children. Thereafter Geeta marries Ranbeer and gives birth to a daughter, who is shown to have inherited the ability to alter reality, despite Geeta’s loss of her own.
