The Bates motel is there. And so is the eerie house on the hill. But no this isn’t the 1960 Hitchcock classic of the same name. in a bold attempt to recreate the wheel, director Gus Van Sant takes up the challenge to deliver the same product but with contemporary filmmaking techniques.
The result: part tribute to Hitchcock, part experiment, and part update for a new and more sophisticated audience. While a lot of the film holds true to the original, this cinematic study into the darker side of the human psyche gets an edgier appeal with a new cast.
This remake still delivers the chills as loony Mama’s boy Norman Bates (Vaughn, Other Side Of Simple, The Break Up) stalks his hapless victim Marion Crane (Heche, Fatal Desire, What Love is).
These roles are by no means easy to assume as the original performances are considered close to perfection. Which makes this movie one to catch if not for the chance to watch the blood and gore in glorious full colour.
