Genre: Drama
Duration: 1 hr 53 min
This movie is generally thought to be one of the best adaptations of “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” the novel written by French author, Choderlos de Laclos.
Director Stephen Frear walked away with three Academy Awards® for his translation of the sexual politics of the 19th century French aristocracy on the big screen.
Having an all-star cast didn’t hurt either - Malkovich and Close are magnificent in their roles, as are Pfeiffer and Thurman. The plot follows the scheming ploys of the exquisite Marquise de Merteuil (Emmy® Award winner Close, The Chumscrubber, Heights), who enlists her former lover, the Vicomte de Valmont (Emmy® Award winner Malkovich, Color Me Kubrick, The Libertine), in exacting revenge on a another former lover for jilting her to marry a virgin. Valmont’s challenge is to deflower the intended bride, the beautiful Cecile de Volanges (Golden Globe® winner Thurman, Kill Bill Vol.2, Paycheck).
However, Merteuil soon discovers that he has other plans of his own. Valmont’s real target is someone else - a beautiful married woman, Madame de Tourvel (Golden Globe® winner Pfeiffer, White Oleander, I Am Sam), who believes strongly in the sanctity of marriage. The eventual results of this torrid arrangement and manipulation: self-destruction. A must-watch for all drama lovers.
